Rethinking objectivity in a world of spin

Excellent - and lengthy - CJR piece by Brent Cunningham that blames the ill-defined notion of objectivity for media lapses in coverage.

”...The press operates under a number of conflicting diktats: be neutral yet investigative; be disengaged but have an impact; be fair-minded but have an edge. Therein lies the nut of our tortured relationship with objectivity. Few would argue that complete objectivity is possible, yet we bristle when someone suggests we aren’t being objective - or fair, or balanced - as if everyone agrees on what they all mean."

Indeed the press does.
The current furore in the UK arising from the death of Dr. Kelly, the Government Weapons of Mass Destruction expert, should provide a spectacular example.  One focus is likely to be the conflict over journalists protecting sources and printing interpretations of source statements which are then disputed by powerful politicians.  What constitutes objective truth and how this relates to decisions - like invading countries - is a key issue in this debate.
