It's a wiki, wiki, wiki world

imageWe’re not sure about you but lately we’ve become addicted to wikis both for work and fun. Now, wikis are starting to get the buzz usually reserved for blogs. And like blogs, people are trying use wikis to do lots of ordinary things in different ways.

Business Week sits down to sip some kool-aid served up by the zealous wiki missionary Ross Mayfield of SocialText and comes away suggesting enterprises might have found a successor to the proprietary dinosaur known as Lotus Notes. (via Slashdot)

This idea is a categorical no-brainer. Anyone who has experienced first-hand the ability of a wiki page to replace a meandering email thread, can attest to that.

So, can wikis be equally effective in enabling the gathering and disseminating news? Sure. But the real question is: Will it be any good?

Rebecca McKinnon, the former jet-setting bureau chief for CNN in Japan turned jet-setting blogger, offers her thoughts on the potential and pitfalls for Wikinews.

Maybe a better approach, rather than claiming to be neutral or unbiased - which is a loaded claim - is to say that wikinews reflects the point-of-view and reporting abilities of its members … so if you don’t like what it’s reporting, join it and contribute what you think will be better reports...

If I was advising Wikinews I would probably suggest focusing on: 1. Investigative reporting of stories not yet taken up by the mainstream press; 2. Breaking news that Reuters & AP, etc. aren’t reporting, but which the wikinews community thinks is important. 3. Alternative angles on stories that the wikinews community thinks the mainstream media didn’t get right.

We’ve been playing around with the idea of setting up a wiki for our communities in Georgia and Utah. We’d love to hear your thoughts on how to make a small town news wiki work.
