Best of Revenge of the Blogs

While we didn’t attend the Revenge of the Blogs conference at Yale, there was plenty of coverage, including the official conference weblog. Here’s some of the best:

• “The weblog doesn’t replace journalism. So far, they’re pundits, philosophers, and editors, but they’re not gathering original facts. In an age when Danny Pearl died in pursuit of these facts, he thinks its hubristic to say that we who sit and comment can replace journalists. But (blogs) should affect journalism.” — Blogs and Journalism panel summary

• “Do weblogs affect journalism? Yes, but not yet. First, editors, publishers, and producers have to wake up and listen. For this is a medium that is all about listening.” — notes from panelist Jeff Jarvis

Three excellent anecdotes about journalism and blogging from panelist David F. Gallagher

• “ A whole lot of things that used to be thought essential for the practice of journalism turned out to be artifacts of print technology, and those things drop away with new technology, like blogging.” — Mickey Kaus speech summary

• “Blogs have shifted information, by allowing experts to focus on the content, and allowing librarians to be better information shifters and gatherers.” — Rory Perry’s coverage

• “Big media has moved away from real reporting in the last few decades: you can get news from big bureaus anyway. So instead, the media were supposed to focus on analysis and big features. But wait: this stuff is cheap, and thus is exactly the stuff that blogs can do. The one thing that big media used to be able to do, and blogs can’t do, is gather hard news. So Reynolds thinks that blogs will slowly push big media back to their real advantage: the gathering of hard news.” — Glenn Reynolds keynote summary

• Glenn Reynolds: “We will see the growth of weblogs and other thin media that are partially competitive and partially symbiotic with big media.” — blogads coverage, live report
