NASA uses participatory journalism: This NY Times article looks at the rather amazing lengths NASA has gone to in order to integrate amateur content sources into the on-going investigation into the Columbia. More than 12,000 still images and videos have been collected and analyzed by NASA. The agency has even gone so far as to purchase the cameras that shot certain footage in order to color correct and examine the conditions existing inside the camera in order to best enhance the footage.
