The BloggerCon discussion is heating up. A few weeks ago, Jay Rosen, chairman of NYU’s journalism department posted a warm-up to his scheduled talk What Is Journalism?
Adding to the lively discussion, Dave Winer has also made a worthy attempt. Journalism is “an independent view of a series of events.”
"Independent means you’re writing what you think is true, and not trying to influence readers for your own purposes.”
What a hoot. Clearly Dave Winer has never delved into the history of the newspaper, nor, apparently, has he ever read one. If there’s any simple definition to fit all cases, I’d say Journalism is the fine art of filtered fact-gathering for the purposes of political persuasion; like a good psychologist or used-car salesman, a good journalist makes it seem like you came to your own conclusions .…
