Dan Gillmor has announced that he plans to leave the Mercury News at the end of the month to work on a participatory journalism start-up venture.
While many comments on the web seem to be lamenting the loss of Dan’s regular, articulate and intelligent voice for our community and cause, we are thrilled that he is dedicating himself to the principles set forth in We Media Ė helping others to find a voice of their own.
For a man of many words, his action will, undoubtedly, speak the loudest.
Take us with you, Dan.

• Tim Porter of First Draft: “Danís departure is more than a loss for the Mercury; it is a metaphor for the newspaper industry:” Newspapers cannot retain their most adventurous, risk-taking people.
• Susan Mernit’s “Citizen Journalism: Businesses start to build": Change is coming, no doubt, and it is really exciting--hope we see some new experiences emerge with information and storytelling, just as they have with P2P and mixing in the music/media space.
• Dan on the future status of his eJournal blog: “Several folks have asked what will happen to this blog. That’s still an open question. I won’t quit blogging, but where the site lives is yet to be determined, at least in the long term.”
