Our new friend in Madrid, media consultant Juan Varela of Periodistas 21, shares his thoughts (in Spanish) on how We Media fared in covering the Madrid skyscraper fire. To the best of our translating skills, he says:
“The (Madrid) fire has been a failure for Journalism 3.0. None of the blogs which discussed the fire covered it directly, at least in way that would be called journalism.
“All the bloggers have commented on the fire through the traditional means (at least so far, I have not found any direct witnesessing of the event). The blogs at Qué also failed. Neither the editors nor the bloggers at Qué reported first hand. There were only two first-person accounts, which read like they could have been observed in chair watching TV.
“The hope of blogs being a journalistic fource, the promises of the abundance of digital cameras and camera phones hooked to moblogs remain a vision of a future that did not present itself (in this event).”
Footnote: Qué, Juan says, is a new free newspaper with a double format: free distribution newspaper in the street; blog community in the Net.
