We wanted to thank K. Paul Mallasch for interviewing Chris and linking to our We Media report in his recent OJR article, Online communities: Growing an Internet garden.
His article extends a metaphor borrowed from a choice Clay Shirky speech he gave at the BBC, Broadcast Institutions, Community Values (September 2002). Shirky concludes, “To create an environment conducive to real community, you will have to operate more like a gardener than an architect.”

- The creation of internet community is a special skill. Usually it requires a lot of work time. Surprisingly for me, I can see some new forums (without a lot of external links) having lots of members, but some other webmaster could spend months/years to create big community, gathering links, etc.
