The November issue of MIT’s Technlogy Review has an article extolling the potential benefits of backlinking technology to all types of online publishing. In The Web’s missing links(sub required), the author David Gallagher says that backlinks “make it easy to follow a path through the Web’s marketplace of ideas,” turning “static Web pages into active hubs of related information.”
Should be exciting to watch this technology evolve.

Blogs have picked up on this over the last several months. Slashdot and others ran a story, too, on ‘referral marketing services’ popping up and selling ‘phony’ traffic to pages to get on referral lists. Shouldn’t be too hard to come up with some sort of technical solution, but if the SPAMmers are going to start getting into abusing them, it may get very interesting.
