Posted by “blondbay” in the MyWay discussion boards: “Competition is good. Competition is the American way and I’m all for it. I’m not looking for perfection. What I’m looking for is simply something new and engaging.” Fair enough. Let’s use that criteria for this review.
New: It took less than 5 minutes for us to replicate our MyYahoo settings, albeit with fewer choices in the news and other content sections. The visual customization settings were deeper than Yahoo, but we recommended just leaving it on the default settings, which look fine. In general, the site seems much faster, probably due to the lack of advertising (they claim to be 51% faster). It’s nice to have a speedy experience, completely devoid of advertising.
Not new: The pathetic logo. To quote Adam Sandler, “Who were the ad wizards that came up with this one?” They must have contracted with the services of eNormicom (AltaVista must have contracted them too!).
Engaging: The TV grids deployment is far superior to Yahoo, with greater levels of customization and ease. Not to mention, the MyWay grids recognize my time zone.
Not engaging: Though the site is just launched, it’s not particularly feature or content rich. MyWay wants too desperately to be a Yahoo killer, and that just ain’t going to happen. They need their own identity, unique content and experience differentiators other than speed. They could start with a unique integration of Google News content.
The discussion boards featured on this site are terribly deployed. There’s nothing that lets activity or popularity bubble to the top. It’s just a buried directory of posts. Also, there’s no connectivity to news, which is a great driver of discussion. As one user noted: “Yahoo! has the advantage of posting messages in reply to all news stories — and here we cannot. I miss that.”
Prediction: If MyWay can build a reputation as a speedy, valued alternative to the ad-laden Yahoo portal, it might become a modest player. But it’s got a ways to go....
