Tools: Macromedia's Contribute

Macromedia has unveiled their latest app, Contribute — which “enables anyone to easily update, add, and publish web content to existing websites without requiring technical skills.” Applications such as this extend the potential of participatory journalism to the static HTML world.

We put the trial version to test this afternoon on a Windows XP machine, and it worked amazingly well. After only a few minutes of set up, and we were editing pages on our main site. Nice. This app is a boon for web designers, allowing them to easily deploy a design for non-tech savvy clients. For the content creator, it does a great job making HTML transparent.

The app supports the concepts of templates, check-in/check-out and different levels of user privileges. This makes it possible to extend publishing access to a wealth of users within minutes, without fear of things going to far awry. It even includes a nice email review feature which “allows authors to obtain feedback before any changes are published.”

We are little fuzzy about how this extends to database publishing systems. Seems to mostly apply to static HTML pages. But you will see this app, and apps like it, develop dynamic/database components.

• Available to purchase in December for $99. Sadly, Windows only for now. Update: Mac OS X version coming (Mac Central)
Download trial version
• The intro to the Flash promo is ridiculous. Skip it and go directly to section of your interest. Also, the buy button at the end of the promo is broken. Don’t bother.
• Thoughts on Paolo’s weblog: “Is there going to be XML-RPC or SOAP support? Is there going to be a way to implement them? If the answer to one of these questions is yes, it’s going to be a lot of fun (and business).”
